- Run Against Traffic - always run facing oncoming traffic, this way you can see them and they can see you. That vital extra split second could be the difference.
- Give Yourself Space - During congestion allow yourself to mount the curb, footpath or hard shoulder.
- Light Up - even during the day time wear reflective gear such as a high visibility vest and if you do venture out near or after dark also bring an LED headlamp or handheld light so that other road users can see you well in advance.
- Unplug - no matter where you are or what time of day or night despite how nice it might be to accompany your run with music you must UNPLUG. Sight is only one part of road safety, sound is just as important. Sometimes you hear a vehicle before you see one so don't risk it. In fact most runners after unplugging for a while will tell you they would never go back. You are outside in nature, run, sight see, look and listen to all the stimulus around you and your run will seem much shorter.
- Run Invisible - the road runners safety mantra; I am invisible, no drivers can see me so I must make sure i give plenty of room.
- A Quick Note - a short note about your run to a loved one, when you left, your route and estimated time of return, just case your route is remote and you have any problems.
- My ID - bring some form of identification and contact numbers should something happen. Try a runner ID bracelet.
- Gear Up - as you have seen running in reduced light conditions has it's own challenges so don't add to them by wearing the wrong gear, for winter training consider the Must Have Winter Running Gear and always wear the right running shoes for you.
